Understanding Burglary Ratings

Burglary safes are categorized by either Underwriters Laboratories Mercantile classifications or by build-spec letter ratings.

B-Rate (Build Standard)

B-rate is a construction spec, not a UL test rating. The minimum build is a 1/4″ steel door and 1/2″ steel body, with a UL Group 2 or better lock. B-rate safes deter opportunistic burglars and are the entry point for commercial cash storage.

UL TL-15

UL Listed: Burglary Resistant, 15 minutes net working time. A UL technician with full common hand and electric tools (drills, saws, pry bars, hammers, chisels) cannot enter the safe in 15 minutes of net working time on the door. Required by many commercial insurance policies for cash storage above $25,000 to $50,000.

UL TL-30

30 minutes net working time on the door. Standard for jewelers, dispensaries, and high-cash retail. Often required by insurance for inventory at risk.

UL TL-30×6

30 minutes net working time on ALL SIX SIDES of the safe (door, top, bottom, left, right, back). Top-tier commercial burglary protection. Required by many insurance policies for jewelry retail and bullion dealers.

UL TRTL-30×6

30 minutes net working time against torch AND tools, on all six sides. The highest UL rating commonly specified outside of bank-vault applications.

The AMSEC Burglary Safe Series We Sell

AMVAULT CE Series — UL TL-15

UL Listed TL-15. Substantial plate steel construction with concrete-amalgam barrier. Internal cabinet and locker options. Sizes from compact countertop to floor-mount.

BLR Series — Underwriter’s Laboratories TRTL

UL Listed TRTL-30×6. Torch and tool resistant on all six sides. The top tier outside of bank vault doors.

Right for: Bullion vaults, high-value jewelry vaults, bank-grade installations.

Insurance and Compliance

Most commercial property insurance policies that cover cash on premises specify a UL safe rating. Carriers like Jewelers Mutual, Hanover, Hartford, Liberty Mutual and others have minimum rating requirements (commonly TL-15 or TL-30 depending on inventory value). If you are buying a burglary safe to satisfy an insurance requirement, give us:

  1. Your carrier’s specified UL rating
  2. The minimum cubic feet your inventory requires
  3. Any anchor / install specifications your carrier mandates

We will quote a UL-listed safe that satisfies the policy and document the install for your file.

Delivery, Installation and Anchoring

TL-rated safes are heavy. AMVAULT CE units run 800-1,800 lbs. CF units run 1,500-3,500 lbs. We bring the right equipment: power dollies rated to 2,000 lbs, J-bars, plate-steel rollers, stair-climbers and hydraulic carts. We anchor per UL specifications using the manufacturer-supplied anchor kit and concrete anchors rated to the listed pull-out strength. Install includes a written record of anchor type, depth, and torque (often required by the insurance carrier).

Service After the Sale

Combination changes, lock conversions (mechanical to electronic and back), bolt work repair, hinge service, alarm contact installation, and emergency openings. See our safe opening service.

Pricing

BWB B-rate safes start around $1,500. AMVAULT CE TL-15 safes start around $4,000. AMVAULT CF TL-30 and TL-30×6 safes range from $7,000 to $20,000+ depending on size. Delivery, install and anchoring are quoted per job. Request a quote with your install address, required UL rating, and target interior size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a TL-30 or will a TL-15 do?

It depends on what your insurance carrier requires and what your inventory at risk is. A TL-15 is twice the safe a B-rate is. A TL-30 is twice the safe a TL-15 is. Doubling protection at each step is a standard insurance ladder. If your carrier specifies TL-30, do not “save money” with TL-15; the policy will deny the claim.

What does TL-30×6 mean exactly?

The “x6” means UL tested 30 minutes of net working time on all SIX sides (front, back, top, bottom, left, right). A standard TL-30 is rated only on the door. If a thief is determined enough to attack a side, top or back, “x6” is the only certification that protects you against that.

Can I install a TL-rated safe on a second floor?

Sometimes. We assess floor load capacity (joist size, span, building age) before quoting a second-story TL install. AMVAULT CF safes regularly exceed 2,000 lbs and require either a slab install or a verified floor reinforcement.

How long does delivery take on a TL-rated safe?

TL-15 AMVAULT CE units deliver in 2-3 weeks. TL-30 and TL-30×6 CF units are typically build-to-order and deliver in 4-8 weeks. Plan accordingly for new buildouts.
